Highlights of Asia
Rocha de Sigiriya
Kyoto
Luang Prabang
Siem Riep
Rocha de Sigiriya
On a rocky plateau overlooking dense jungle and a vast plain lies Sigiriya, where you'll find the mysterious remains of King Kasyapa's 5th-century fortress. Be sure to brave the now-sturdy spiral staircase to see the 19 frescoes of female nature spirits (apsaras) painted below a ledge some 300 feet above the rock. The frescoes are beautiful and still alive after 1500 years. Near the top of the Rock Keep is a pair of huge stone lion paws (all that remains of a giant stone lion).
Kyoto
If you can only visit one city in Japan, it's Kyoto. This ancient city (home to almost 1.5 million people) was the capital of Japan for over a thousand years and is still considered the country's spiritual capital. Kyoto is adorned with a large number of temples, palaces, gardens, and museums. If you are lucky enough to visit during the spring months, you will fall in love with the fragile beauty of the pink sakura (cherry blossoms). These beautiful flowers have inspired a variety of artworks and multimedia productions and are an iconic symbol of Japan. In the evening, if you have some free time, take a walk around Pontocho, the traditional place of nightlife. This narrow lane is perhaps the most romantic street in Japan and you might even spot a geisha.
Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most beautiful places in Southeast Asia. Attractions include dozens of historic Buddhist temples, elegantly aged French-era houses, and pretty streets perfect for strolling. Every day, just before dawn, hundreds of orange-robed monks parade through the streets of the city in a procession seeking alms from devout Buddhists. Travelers can buy sticky rice from vendors to contribute to the monks' food donation bowls. The cool of the morning is also the best time to climb Phusi (a steep hill with stunning views of the city), followed by a visit to Wat Xieng Thong, a classic of Lao architecture dating back to 1560, decorated with carvings, the Ramayana (an Indian epic).
Siem Riep
This is where travelers stay when visiting Angkor Wat, a remarkable historical temple with 5 lotus-shaped towers reaching 65 meters in height. It is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. After a morning tour of the temples, explore the Old Market in the city's French colonial center to find local handicrafts: Cambodian silks, wooden musical instruments, tapestries, shadow puppets, and wood and stone carvings. Take time to relax and people watch at one of the French-style outdoor cafes. In addition to being a starting point for Angkor Wat, Siem Reap is also just a 30-minute drive from Tonle Sap, the largest lake in Cambodia and Southeast Asia.
