What is this dark vs light system all about?
SWTOR's Dark vs. Light system allows you to engage in an ongoing, never-ending battle between the dark and light sides of the Force in SWTOR. Participate in server-wide battles, earn Dark of Light points for your character, and unlock special bonuses and perks during the victory phase.
The current form of the Dark vs. Light mechanic is one of the few remaining pieces of theGalactic Command(This system is gone, replaced byspoils of warand Renown Ranks) and the Dark vs Light event from 2016. The Dark vs Light event was revamped in the 5.0 era and now functions as a standalone, recurring event. It is independent on each server.
How to choose your lineup
Once you take your first steps on your character's home planet, you can choose which side of the conflict you support. By default, the Dark vs. Light toggle button is located next to your mini-map and looks like this:
You can change your lineup at any time during your adventures. The moment you press the button on this square, you start accumulating points for the other side of the conflict.
Keep in mind that it may take a while for your character's lineup to actually change back and forth depending on what level you've reached. Your character's alignment state will not be reset and you must first switch back to the neutral state.
Literally every activity you choose to do in SWTOR will reward you with light or dark side points as you complete it: defeating enemies, completing quests, and making decisions in your story all determine your character's direction.
How to earn light or dark points while playing
Everything you do as part of your game increases your influence in the war between the dark side and the light side, igniting explosive and unexpected battles between the dark side and the light side on your server.
If you're wondering if your server might be too one-sided, BioWare has an answer. When one side begins to dominate, a diminishing returns effect comes into play. This allows the losing side to gain an advantage by gaining more alignment points towards the ultimate goal: securing the Victory Phase for themselves.
How Dark vs. Light Battle works server-wide
Once you've chosen your side, you'll get points for either the dark or light side. At this point, you can see your character's orientation as it is reflected in your character window.
How to find out your character alignment gauge
You can view your lineup by pressing C to open yourscharacter sheet(Default) and displaying the light/dark meter on the left side of the character window, as shown here:
How to track the current battle status on the server
As you accumulate points, they are added to the total score for your server's dark or light side, shifting the balance of the ongoing battle to one side or the other. To find out which way the battle is headed, check the Galactic Map window and look at the dark/light indicator in the lower right corner:
As one side gets closer to victory, you will see the changes in the movement of the gauge as one side's color dominates the slider. In the example above, the light side is currently victorious and a timer counts down until the next fight begins.
There are 5 "breakpoints" on each side, each representing a "level". For example, if the light side is currently in the lead, it would currently be at light 3.
Your character's alignment directly affects the progression of Dark vs. Light combat on your server.
What is the victory level in Dark vs Light?
If one side secures victory, the galaxy will feel the effects. For example, let's say the dark side is winning on your server and you are on Dark 5. Suddenly you can see dark side enemies appearing and attacking, like a Sith Lord ready to open the Jedi Temple to attack Coruscant.
Light side players can try to repel the attack by teaming up to try and defeat this new dark side threat that has emerged. This even allows you to earn Lightside Tokens, which you can use to purchase items from an exclusive Lightside retailer.
If your character's alignment matches the alignment of the winning side on your server, you will receive either a Dark Side or Light Side Token. As the dark side vs light side war continues, your efforts will help your side win the war on your server and you will be rewarded for your efforts!
You may only carry a limited number of tokens with you at any one time. Also, they are per-character, not legacy-bound currency. Currently, the limit is set at 100, but BioWare changes these values frequently.
To win the battle, your server must reach "Dark 5" or "Light 5". The side that reaches level 5 first will be declared the winner of the battle! Next comes the "victory phase".
What do you get with Dark vs Light?
During the Victory Phase, dark and light side players receive different buffs, bonuses, and benefits depending on which side won and which side they supported.
If you win Dark vs. Light server fight
If your character's alignment matches the winning side (example: your character is on the dark side and the dark side has reached Dark 5), you gain the following benefits:
- Earned additional reputation points
- Tokens that match your lineup each time you gain a Reputation rank
For example, if your character is Dark 2, you will get two tokens if you participated in the last event. If you haven't played that character before the victory phase in that Dark vs Light session, you don't earn anything.
If you lose Dark vs. Light server fight
If your character's alignment aligns with the losing side, don't worry, you gain something too (for example, if your character is on the light side and the light side lost the war). You will receive the following benefits:
- A bonus to all dark/light points received, based on your alignment
- You can defeat enemies on the opposite side of the alignment that spawn in the galaxy to earn tokens that match your character's alignment.
If one side wins, the server goes into a "victory state" for a period of time, and then the battle begins again. During this "victory state" the losing side gains a short-term advantage as all of their alignment point gains increase during this time.
During the Victory Phase, special world bosses appear.
During the Victory Phase, 8-16 player world bosses spawn in non-random locations on different planets: Dromund Kaas/Coruscant, Alderaan, Tatooine, Hoth. If you reset them while you are on the losing side, you will be rewarded with Alignment Tokens.

It's been years since I've competed in Dark vs Light. I started recreating this old guide in October 2020 and am still researching, validating and looking at how the system has changed since its inception. If you would like to help, please share your feedback with us in the comments below.
